What is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas that has been found in homes all over the United States. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation.
How Do I get rid of Radon in my home?
If Radon levels in your home need to be reduced, there are a few approaches. The way your radon mitigation system is designed will depend on multiple construction components present in your home. For example, the existence of a basement or crawl space, versus a concrete slab will be a significant determining factor in choosing which mitigation system is needed.
Radon Mitigation Systems are Soil Depressurization Systems. Radon systems come in several forms and are customized for each unique situation.
There are a few different ways to get rid of radon.
- Active Soil Depressurization – This is the preferred method. This includes installing a 4” plastic pipe through the basement floor, and having it exit through the roof or wall. A fan in the basement, attic, or outside then moves the air through the pipe to outside. These fans often last around five to ten years. Here’s an example of what this looks like:
- Seal Basement Floor and Walls – This helps to prevent radon from entering the home through cracks and openings in the basement.
